Started supporting Editorial systems on Sun Solaris servers, focusing on applications for transmission of stories and photos. Got my hands into building Solaris servers, FTP service, scripts, and websites. In one project, built an extranet website for remote reporters to read news wires and submit stories. Stretching my Unix background, I engineered a revenue-generating FTP web server on a Solaris Cluster for advertisers to upload ads. Used Apache, ProFTPD, MySQL authentication, and phpMyAdmin. Empowered super-users to manage FTP accounts with a net2ftp web-client. This project was a real learning experience! Another growth spurt was in an engineering team. We developed a web site on Perl-CGI + HTML + CSS + Javascript + jQuery + Ajax with a PostgreSQL DB to centralize the PDF archive system. Then I supported the apps for the Circulation business, responding to business issues and change requests. This enabled me to acquire a deep knowledge of mission critical Unix and Windows apps, with an understanding of process flows and the insight to identify areas for continuous improvement.

At BCBS, got introduced to the insurance industry supporting a mission-critical electronic claim network running on Novell Netware and Sun Solaris. Used my Unix C expertise to write programs with NDBM database function calls to validate claim files and generate reports. And used SDLC methodologies to manage a mainframe mailbox migration project through installation, testing, and implementation phases.

With my Engineering degree, EDS provided training in JCL, C, and SDLC methodology. I was assigned to the Saturn account, working with vendors to investigate and resolve data translation problems. Having survived the boot camp, got called to the GM account. Primarily worked on the CAD/CAM software which had to be portable on the HP, IBM, and Sun platforms. One project was to write a C Motif GUI to automate remote writing of files to a tape. Also developed a user interface in C to organize 3-D geometry into logical collections of data.
