About
I sit at a rare intersection: a researcher trained at Johns Hopkins and Copenhagen University; an 8-year regulator at the Saudi FDA; and a practitioner who has spent years building bridges between evidence-based science and real-world health impact.Today I work as a postdoctoral research fellow at JHU Bloomberg, a health policy consultant at the World Bank, and a technical advisory board member at a Saudi biotech VC fund—three roles that together reflect how I think about digital health: as a scientist, a strategist, and a market builder. My research sits at the frontier of digital health: measuring what screens do to bodies, minds, and behavior—and designing interventions that actually change it. I've published 20+ peer-reviewed papers on wearable biosensor analytics, behavioral interventions, and digital well-being, including a culturally tailored randomized trial promoting digital balance. in Saudi. The other part: helping innovative health tech companies — particularly those bridging US, European, and Gulf markets — find their footing, validate and tailor their science, and build the right relationships. If you're building in digital health and thinking about the Gulf, that's where I bring disproportionate value.I also host a bilingual Arabic/English health tech podcast, and I've worked with 200+ graduate students and clinicians on research design and academic navigation.📍 DC area | 🌐 drsaud.net | 🎙 AfiyahTech Podcast (https://www.youtube.com/@AfiyahTechPodcast)

Experience

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
• Collaborate as part of an international team on digital well-being interventions in Saudi Arabia, fostering partnerships across the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. • Lead the design and implementation of tailored interventions for the Saudi community, utilizing comprehensive literature reviews, intervention mapping, insights from educators, youth, and experts, and pilot testing to develop culturally relevant solutions. • Conducted a national survey analyzing the impact of social media use, gaming disorder, and their correlations with mental, physical, and social health. • Partner with key stakeholders, such as the Ministry of Education, to establish sustainable, scalable, and long-term interventions that promote digital well-being. • Contribute to the publication of peer-reviewed papers and reports that have informed the design of culturally tailored interventions, demonstrating the project's lasting impact and technical excellence. • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and national events.

Guest Researcher
• Leading a strategic collaboration with Denmark Technical University to develop an advanced machine-learning model for predicting maternal health outcomes, such as labor timing, using large-scale wearable and health data. • Contributing to research on postpartum physical activity, mental health, sleep, and sedentary time patterns, as well as studying physical behavior in babies and children from the offspring of the FitMum project.
Education

Public health and epidemiology
During my Ph.D., I delved into the FitMum project, dedicated to advancing maternal and child well-being through innovative interventions. In FitMum-RCT, we provided pregnant women with options: structured supervised exercise training or motivational counseling, integrating health technology throughout pregnancy. My PhD dissertation focused on exploring the impact of these interventions on pregnant women's physical activity, sleep, and sedentary behavior. Using various measurement methods, including activity trackers. I navigated the complexities of big data, utilizing R, I conducted robust statistical analyses and created compelling visualizations, offering valuable insights to the realm of maternal health.

Nutrition
The Master of Public Health in Nutrition provides specialized training in community nutrition within the multidisciplinary programs offered by the School of Public Health. The program is designed to train professionals to assume leadership positions in assessing community nutrition needs, as well as in planning, directing, and evaluating the nutrition component of health promotion and disease prevention efforts. Public health nutritionists work in a variety of settings in government and voluntary agencies, public and private community health centers, ambulatory care clinics, schools, industries, private practice, and specialized community health projects. They function as directors and administrators of nutrition programs, nutrition care providers, advocates, educators, counselors, consultants, and researchers.
