Regional studies focuses on people and their relationship with changing environments. It examines regions or regional systems in detail. The scale of examination areas varies from local communities to global issues. Central themes are: environmental monitoring, urban and regional structures, factors affecting regional development and differentiation, methods to manage regional development. International Development is a problem-oriented, interdisciplinary and multicultural field of science. Research issues on global and local differences of development are e.g. regional conflicts, migration, refugee problems, urbanization, population increase, gender issues, exploitation of natural resources, forest degradation and environmental conservation, poverty and digital divides as well as the measurement of development. Minors: Political Science, Geography, Latin American Studies and Spanish.

The University of Helsinki elected certain students of merits to attend a three-week Summer Course in Shanghai including lectures, seminars and study visits.
