Master's Thesis

I did a 6-month master’s thesis at the LiDAR department of Bosch. Investigating a practical and real-life business topic made that period an invaluable experience for me. Also, for my thesis, I had to work with other employees, where I learnt how to work in a team and collaborate with other members. • Optical ray tracing simulation with OpticStudio (Zemax) • Experimental implementation and alignment of optical setups • Optical components selection • Beam characterization and data evaluation • Cross-checking the measured beam profiles with simulation

Optical properties of graphene nanoribbons

Graphene has attracted widespread interest over the past decades due to its exceptional electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the characteristics of the graphene family materials are not completely understood yet; thus, further studies are ongoing to find more about the material. The current project examines the influence of various parameters on graphene nanoribbons' (GNRs) optical properties. This study discusses the impact of factors such as Fermi energy, nanoribbon width, and scattering rate on the GNR's localized surface plasmon (LSP) frequency. Moreover, a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) code within the open-source software package Meep for calculating the GNR absorption has been developed, which can be used in further research.

Variable stripe length method (VSLM) setup

One of the most critical factors to evaluate the quality of the laser mediums is a material gain that indicates the medium's light amplification ability. To measure the gain of a perovskite sample, the variable stripe length (VSL) technique is one of the most valuable and simplest ways. In this project, I focused on building a VSL set-up to be able to observe an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE).

Laser induced damage studies for multilayer compatibility testing

In this project, we built a setup that allows studying the laser modification threshold of optical materials. By exposing the samples to a He-Ne laser system, we investigate their modification under different exposure times. We found experimentally that increasing the exposure time leads to an improved modification, resulting in better detection contrasts.
