My primary research focus has been on robot motion planning for coping with motion and sensing uncertainty i.e., to generate plans that balance exploration (actively gathering more information from sensors) and exploitation (executing actions) to reliably complete a task. As part of this effort, we have advocated the use of fast trajectory optimization methods with uncertainty-aware objectives and applied it to applications such as robot navigation under uncertainty, active SLAM, multi-robot coordination for target tracking, and exploration and mapping of unknown environments.

Working on challenging research problems related to motion planning under uncertainty for navigation of autonomous robots. We applied these ideas to planning motions for medical robots for performing minimally invasive medical procedures and showed that incorporating uncertainty into the planning process can dramatically increase procedure success rates. We also developed strategies for distributed reactive collision avoidance and path planning for multi-agent systems. We successfully applied these ideas to multi-robot navigation and virtual crowd simulation for interactive applications such as computer games and virtual reality.
