Research into fabrication and thermal conductivity of a polymer-ceramic composite as a substitute for a commercially available potting compound used for electric vehicle motors. Placement carried out at Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge. Experience gained in characterisation techniques such as SEM and micro computed tomography, as well as use of COMSOL software to construct thermal simulations. Further experience included reporting and presenting results and volunteering as a demonstrator at an outreach practical session run by the university.

Research project on dielectric breakdown strength of layered ceramics. Preparation of batches of samples via uniaxial and isostatic pressing, sintering and grinding, followed by high-voltage testing, analysis and comparison between layered and bulk samples. Experience gained in working both independently and as part of an international research group.

4-year integrated BA and MSci degree. Master's project: Bismuth-based Alternatives to Lead-based Perovskite Solar Cells. Techniques involved included chemical vapour transport, plasma cleaning, optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, photoluminescence and photoemission spectroscopy. 3rd year literature review: Dielectric Materials for Energy Storage. Discussion of theory relating to energy storage by capacitors, candidate materials and composites, their suitability for applications in areas such as renewable energy.
