Serve as English Linguist on the Global Localization Team. Responsible for translating and localizing Japanese text for global audience. Perform checks on previously translated items to ensure clarity for the target audience.

* Lead a team of seven English linguists to localize UX-related items (such as screens, notifications, and banners) in the LINE app and other LINE services. * Ensure English UX localization projects are completed on-time and accurately by managing project timelines, monitoring team workloads, and interacting with project managers and requestors. * Localize projects by translating Japanese source text into English or reviewing English provided by non-natives or translated from Korean source text. * Run linguistic quality assurance on pre-release versions to ensure translations appear correctly. * Perform linguistic reviews on previously released apps and services to update their text to LINE’s current English style and correct inconsistencies. * Maintain and update LINE’s Global English Style Guide as needed. * Concurrently serve as lead for LINE’s English Council, a group of English translators from teams all over the company.

Assisted in teaching English to four elementary schools (mainly 5th-6th grade) and one junior high. Planned lessons and activities to facilitate elementary school English classes with homeroom teachers. Supported junior high school English teachers during classroom instruction and with administrative tasks outside of class. In addition, got involved in both school and community events and groups, including (but not limited to): kendo, taiko, English conversation (eikaiwa) and reading English to children at the library.

Served as a student instructor (a role normally reserved for graduate students) for the class, Computer Science 3: Introduction to Computer Science. Ran two lab sessions a week where I was in charge of teaching and reviewing computer science concepts in the SCHEME language to beginner level students. During lab sessions, addressed student questions and advised them as needed. Helped develop semester currirculum in conjunction with main teacher and other student instructors. Graded student quizzes, projects, and exams.

Worked mainly on two projects during this time: The first project was in the public sector, helping with the design and installation of an online unemployment benefits portal for the state of California. Helped design the front-end screens for users and administrators through discussions with state personnel. Created documentation to for step by step use of screens and interactions between front end screens and back end data. Worked daily with implementation team to ensure screens were created properly and acted as intermediary between state staff and implementation team. The second project was a data filtering project for a company's recent acquisition. Researched several years of data to determine data patterns and proper filtering techniques. Interviewed both acquiring and acquired staff to ensure filtering parameters. Ensured data processing team was working at proper efficiency and resolved problems as they arose.

Translated a wide variety of documents (formal letters, presentations, flyers, e-mails, etc.) for Kumamoto Prefecture between Japanese and English. Interpreted between Japanese and English on behalf of the prefecture at various events (courtesy visits, official meetings, assisting foreign visitors to Kumamoto). Performed cultural/international exchange in the community as requested by schools, community groups, etc. Concurrently served as Prefectural Advisor for the JET Programme in Kumamoto Prefecture. Helped run the JET Programme for around 100 JET participants in Kumamoto Prefecture. Performed outreach to JET participants and helped advise/counsel them as requested. Visited around 30 JETs per year at their schools/workplaces for face-to-face interviews. Planned and run Kumamoto Orientation, an annual event to welcome new JETs to Kumamoto. Maintained kumamotojet.com, a web portal for Kumamoto JETs. Organized and edited "The YOKA", a seasonal publication written by JETs in Kumamoto.
