Robert Klara
Senior Editor @ ADWEEK
About
I'm a seasoned reporter, writer, editor and author, currently employed full time as a senior editor for ADWEEK magazine in New York. As a journalist who's worked in publishing for three decades, I've not only held full-time posts at an array of periodicals, I've maintained a multidisciplinary career in which I augment the experience and responsibilities of my full-time post with work—performed on my own time and initiative—that ventures into a broader array of subject matter. And so, while my primary expertise lay in business and marketing, I've also authored three nonfiction history books and written in-depth features about topics ranging from civil-rights history to the Cold War to 19th and 20th century transportation and technology.Overall, my work has appeared in over 20 magazines, newspapers and websites—both business and consumer—including leading titles like The New York Times, The Guardian, and Smithsonian. As a longtime reporter and writer for ADWEEK, I've been privileged to cover a extensive array of topics, trends, companies, and people. My subject matter has ranged from an exclusive profile of Google's latest vice president of advertising, to the ripple effects of GLP-1 drugs across industries, to how companies recover from public episodes of gun violence.Public figures, influencers, and celebrities increasingly account for the identity (and sometimes part ownership) of today's consumer brands. My work has therefore included the opportunity to speak with these figures about the intersection of popular and corporate cultures. Pharrell Williams, Lenny Kravitz, Brooke Shields and Brooklyn Peltz Beckham have been among the public figures I've spoken with and written about.I've authored three critically-acclaimed books on American history during WWII and the postwar period, all of which hold 4.5/5-star ratings on Amazon. My books have also won critical acclaim from publications including The Washington Post, The Daily Beast, and Kirkus Reviews. The work of book promotion has given me extensive public-speaking experience, and I have lectured/spoken at institutions including Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, The 92nd Street Y, The New York State Bar Association, and the presidential libraries of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Richard M. Nixon. My experience as a journalist and an author has also led to a wide variety of international media appearances, including National Public Radio, the BBC, and Germany's RTL network.

Experience

Senior Editor
New York City Metropolitan Area
As senior editor at ADWEEK, I divide my time among reporting and writing breaking news items, short-form topical stories, and in-depth features, the last of which is my speciality area. I also write and shoot an Instagram video series every two weeks, a look back at significant events in corporate history that, while oft overlooked today, remain highly instructive. I've been covering marketing and branding trends for nearly 20 years and draw from that background in every piece of content with my name on it. Since I've also worked full time as an editor in the past, I fill in as needed to help coordinate, write and produce mixed sections and multi-byline coverage. As needed, I also write scripts for the publication's main-stage events.

Staff Writer
With the consolidation of "Brandweek" and "Mediaweek" magazines into a re-launched "Adweek," I became (and continue to serve as) a staff writer who covers marketing trends. My stories tend to center on the offbeat, colorful, and under-the-radar topics that many other publications overlook. I also contribute news stories to our print magazine and Web site, and edit my own section: "Perspective," a look back at vintage advertising and how it has influenced today's cultural attitudes and marketing approaches.
