About
Ryan Boyd is a biochemist with a "big picture" outlook and an intense passion for applications of science that will translate into meaningful advancement of society. He did his PhD research in the field of structural biology and is currently interested in expanding his horizons into the realm of therapeutics. He is constantly fascinated by nature and the application of cutting edge biotechnology and biochemistry, especially in applying computational methods to otherwise intractable problems. During his PhD he studied a small GTPase-GEF complex which is responsible for the aggressive tissue invasion observed in glioblastoma. In addition he works on a project to discover the structure of Myxoma viral proteins associated with viral immune evasion as well as the structural aspects of Adenovirus implicated Vaccine Induced Thrombocytic Thrombocytopenia(VITT). While infectious diseases and computational protein engineering were his first passions in biochemistry, he is also fascinated by cancer immunotherapy, especially antigen processing and immune activation in tumors.

• Produced and QC’d RNA based drug candidates and research materials for stakeholders throughout the organization. • Established high throughput QC pipelines for ensuring DNA and RNA quality including nanopore based NGS and capillary electrophoresis. • Proposed and spearheaded design and production of a novel 3’ chemical modification and bio-conjugation strategy for RNA.

Scientist I
AmplifyBio
South San Francisco, California, United States
I am part of a team responsible for engineering, production, purification, QC, as well as analytical and functional testing of biomolecules including proteins and RNA lipid nanoparticles.

Scientist I, Biologics
South San Francisco, California, United States
I am part of a team developing innovative biomolecule drugs to treat disease. My team's focus is on the purification, formulation, QC, and develop-ability assessment of proteins to support research operations at NGM.

Graduate Student
Tempe, AZ
I am a graduate student studying structural biology and biochemistry. I use numerous biochemical and computational techniques including cryo electron microscopy (single particle TEM), X ray crystallography, and various computational techniques to study the structure and function of proteins. I am also working towards proficiency in micro electron diffraction, computational protein engineering (Rosetta), and molecular dynamics simulation. I code in python and have taken it upon myself to study data science and deep learning as well. I TA the biophysics 463 class and am passionate about mentorship. I am very proud to have trained a number of very successful undergraduate students, some of which are now pursuing their own PhDs and MDs.

Junior research scientist
Davis, California, United States
Chromatography, spectroscopy, and analytical yield quantification of natural products using solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extractions, TLC, C18 chromatography, and LCMS analysis of small molecule active compounds.

RA
Davis, California, United States
Academic research using computational protein engineering methods to study rationally designed mutants of the enzyme purine nucleoside phosphorylase. I performed numerous enzyme assays and HPLC analysis of enzymatic reaction products. I also gained proficiency in expression vector design, mutagenesis, cloning, E.coli culture, protein expression, purification, and quantification, as well as uv-vis spectroscopy and kinetic enzyme assays optimization. Promoted from intern to research associate.
