I was a core member of the team in the IAEA Nuclear Instrumentation Lab developing a UAV based gamma radiation detection and mapping system to be mounted on a commercial UAV (by Aibotix). I designed custom mechanical parts and manufactured them using a 3D printer. I built mounts and holders for the UAV, custom cases for electronics, and fittings for radiation detectors. I also worked hands-on with the UAV, from upgrading the ultrasonic sensors and removing and reattaching the 2-axis gimbal to ensuring the propellers were tight and keeping the LiPo batteries charged. I programmed UAV waypoint flights, ran the flights in the field and downloaded and processed the data afterwards. I geotagged the collected images and used photogrammetry software to build 3D models and orthophotos.

I was at Aibotix GmbH in Kassel, Germany for two months, where I was trained to operate and maintain the Aibot X6 and process the data it produced. I helped test the flight behaviour of the new UAV edition, the X6 V2. I built accurate 3D models and create orthophotos using photogrammetry software. I helped train Aibotix customers in the use of the software and hardware, and helped produce the English language versions of technical handbooks and manuals.
