Rhiannon Camarillo

Collaborated with faculty and student organizations at Duke and NCCU to investigate the causes of youth disenfranchisement, with a focus on provisional balloting. Designed and implemented targeted interventions to prevent provisionals, improve voter education, and assist students affected by Hurricane Helene. Conducted statewide survey research on misinformation and youth trust in voting, reaching over 9,000 college students across 10 universities. Led campus outreach efforts, created voter guides, and launched digital campaigns to inform student voters during the 2024 election.

Supported solicitors in providing pro bono legal aid to individuals experiencing homelessness or seeking social housing. Coauthored a report exposing the unlawful denial of emergency accommodation by local authorities in Ireland. Led a policy project challenging a discriminatory County and City Management Association (CCMA) practice.

Co-directed Project Citizen, Duke’s civic engagement–themed experiential orientation program. Guided 60 first-year students through programming centered on discourse, community, and systems of change. Developed content in partnership with Duke’s Center for Politics and oversaw logistics, including scheduling, travel, and event planning. Led recruitment and training of Orientation Leaders.

Edited and published monthly articles on U.S. law in collaboration with a team of three undergraduate writers. Provided feedback to support writing quality and legal analysis. Note: This role was held while the organization operated as JURIS, prior to its 2024 rebrand.

Researched and published articles on international legal cases and global policy. Analyzed the implications of high-profile litigation and climate negotiations. Note: This role was held while the organization operated as JURIS, prior to its 2024 rebrand.

Conducted legislative research and drafted memos on a range of policy issues, including criminal justice reform, international security, and natural resource management. Wrote bill cosponsorship recommendations, attended congressional hearings and briefings, and supported constituent services by fielding 100+ calls and leading Capitol tours.

Conducted research on reentry services across five North Carolina counties. Contributed to the development of a comprehensive, updated reentry resource guide to increase equity in post-incarceration outcomes and expand access to housing, employment, and legal support for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Conducted research for political scientist Nicholas Carnes' State Legislators Project, a national study on the occupational backgrounds of state lawmakers. Collected and organized data to support research on class representation and political inequality. Funded by the Eads Family Undergraduate Research Endowment.

Orchestrated 3-day campaign school at the Sanford School of Public Policy to educate healthcare workers about running for office. Compiled voting resources and distributed newsletters to promote civic engagement among nurses and midwives. Designed and published 50+ social media posts to vitalize social media accounts and boost engagement.
