Professor Renee Hobbs is one of the nation's leading authorities on media literacy education. She is author of 12 book and more than 300 scholarly and professional articles. Hobbs works to advance digital and media literacy through scholarship and community service and has developed numerous award-winning multimedia resources for K-12 educators that help teachers integrate digital and media literacy into the curriculum. She has received more than $7 million in grants to support research, education and community outreach efforts in digital and media literacy education. Hobbs is the Founding Co-Editor of the Journal for Media Literacy Education, an open-access online peer reviewed journal. Hobbs teaches fully-online graduate courses in media studies, education and library and information studies. Hobbs helped found the Partnership for Media Education, which evolved into the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE). Responsible for leading the development of the school consisting of 60 full-time faculty, 1,200 undergraduates and 300 graduate students in six departments or programs, including Journalism, Communication Studies, Film/Media, Public Relations, Writing & Rhetoric and the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. Developed a strategic business plan to guide the direction of the school; initiated a curriculum renewal process to accelerate curriculum innovation, bring real-world learning into all programs, and advance research and graduate program coordination. Developed and implemented an annual faculty development program. Responsible for alumni development, community relations, and fundraising. Created a Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy and co-directed a professional program, the Summer Institute in Digital Literacy (2013, 2014). Taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the departments of Education, Library and Information Studies, and Communication Studies, including: Graduate Seminar in Media Studies, Information Competencies of Youth, Texts and E-Tools for Children and Youth, Mass Media and Children. Interim Director, Graduate Program in Library and Information Studies (January 2012 – January 2013). Guided the faculty through a comprehensive curriculum renewal and reorganization. Planned and implemented the 50th Anniversary Gala. Developed 2 new courses for the program. Wrote and received a federal grant for $500K from the Institute for Museum and Library Studies for Media Smart Libraries. Wrote the Biennial Accreditation Report for the American Library Association.
