René Neumann

I serve as the head of the Presidency, one of the two governing bodies of European Guanxi. I co-lead and supervise of all organisation-wide activity alongside the Secretary-General, including events, the podcast, the annual in-person youth conference, editorial, communications, the website, partnerships and external relations, memberships, and HR.

I served as the Head of the Secretariat, one of the two main governing bodies of European Guanxi, the largest youth organisation on EU-China relations serving as a network and platform for young China scholars and professionals across Europe boasting 1000+ members and a staff team of over 60 members. The Secretariat is in charge of internal governance and output. This includes producing work plans with the heads of the editorial, events, and communications teams to ensure the timeliness and the quality of the output they produce. I was also responsible for human resources, member engagement and website management.

I led a team of about 10 editors alongside the Editor-in-Chief, coordinating the weekly publication of blog posts and articles for the yearly edition of the European Youth Perspectives on International Relations of China (EYPIC) journal submitted by students and young professionals based all over Europe and China. The areas covered by the pieces include international relations, economy and business, technology and media, history, and language and culture.

I edited and proofread research and policy articles on EU-China relations drafted by students and young professionals based all over Europe and China.

I assist Dr Shi Peiran and Dr Lai Huaxia in a funded research project on the impact of Chinese FDI in Latin America. In particular, I am researching how Chinese FDI is perceived versus European and U.S. investment among local communities around Chinese SOE Zijin’s Tres Quebradas project in Catamarca, Argentina, through fieldwork and secondary-source analysis. I also research the ongoing international arbitration between private Chinese company Ganfeng and the Government of Mexico over mining concessions in Sonora.

I oversee a 30-member editorial team to ensure the timely release of the journal’s trimonthly editions and the continuous publication of blog articles. I lead editorial strategy, manage workflows, and uphold content quality across all platforms.

I assisted the Editor-in-Chief in supervising a team of ~30 people, including writers and editors, besides continuing carrying out my normal tasks as an editor. This included reviewing all articles edited by the team, managing the editing sheet, coordinating communication between editors and internal and external writers, and overseeing recruitment for vacancies.

The European Studies Review is a bimonthly peer-reviewed journal on European Affairs run by students and recent graduates. As an editor, I edited both journal articles and blog posts published on the ESR website.

Selected from over 1,500 applicants as one of ~60 participants (<4% acceptance rate) in the Hudson Institute’s 2024 Political Studies Summer Fellowship, which is a paid six-week programme in political theory and public policy connecting a diverse cohort of students and recent graduates. The Fellowship combines the study of politics and political thought in a seminar setting with policy workshops led by think tank scholars and experienced government officials, as well as a series of sessions with high-profile speakers.

Selected from about 8,500 applicants to represent Italy as one of ~100 participants in the 5th ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS5), which is a fully funded leadership programme connecting young professionals and students from 50+ Asian and European countries to learn, exchange and collaborate within the framework of Leadership and "Society 5.0". As part of the programme, which served as a bridge between the participants and decision-makers and leaders from Asian & European countries, I was a member of a working group to devise a new strategy for young talent attraction and retention at PwC Luxembourg.

As an undergraduate research assistant of the fellowship titled 'Strongwomen? A Comparative Analysis of Gender Discourse in the Electoral Campaigns of Marine Le Pen and Giorgia Meloni', I assisted Dr Marianna Griffini in investigating the ways in which female populist radical right leaders frame female leadership. In particular, I was tasked with drafting literature reviews on Jacinda Ardern and Marine Le Pen, going through all of the two leaders' posts across all social media, as well as those of the NZ Labour Party and National Rally, and compiling different Excel sheets grouping them into key themes. The findings have been used for a journal article titled "Strongwomen? A Comparative Analysis of Gender Discourse in the Electoral Campaigns of Marine Le Pen and Giorgia Meloni".

The King’s 100 project is an advisory student body for the administration at King's College London, tasked with giving student perspective for improving existing policies and creating new ones. This was an opportunity to act as a co-creator with the university and directly input on a variety of student experience projects across King’s. The 2022-2023 academic year's project particularly focused on devising new ways of promoting mental health services available across the university.

I worked as an intern at the section of Chancery and Multilateral Affairs of the Embassy of Mexico in Italy, where I closely assisted the Deputy Head of Mission in his duties. As part of the internship, I: - Compiled a list of all the existing treaties and agreements between Mexico and Italy. - Performed duties inside the Deputy Head of Mission's office upon his absence. - Helped organise a celebratory event for the Embassy's Centenary.

I edited, proofread and translated articles in English into Italian and vice-versa for the Eastwest magazine.
