I attempted to define newer management strategies for the prostate diseases, BPH and CaP, using the approaches of phyto-therapy as well as designed drugs (chemotherapy for hormone refractory prostate cancer). In phytotherapy we have identified effective lead in seeds of a cucurbitaceous plant for the management of BPH while some phytochemicals in unique combinations synergistically inhibited CaP cell proliferation. On the other, a number of molecules designed as SERMs exhibited promise as new management agents for BPH and CaP. For in vitro experiments I used human BPH-derived primary stromal cell cultures and CaP cell lines. For in vivo, experiments adult Sprague Dawley albino rat model was used. With the aid of molecular and cell biology techniques, I resolved the signaling pathways and other parameters involved in the action of promising agents. Role of estrogen receptor (beta), MAPK signaling and PI3K/Akt pathway has been implicated in the action of various new agents.
