Prof. Dr. Thomas Thiemann

I am an energy technology engineer with a PhD in turbomachinery aerodynamics. After my PhD I worked for five years in an industrial research facility as a project lead for international iron- and steelmaking companies. Special focus: Process optimization and issue resolution for all kind of energy & flow related tasks. I joined Siemens in 2001 and worked in various steam turbine management positions, thereof 10 years heading the global steam turbine R&D organization with > 300 employees located at multiple sites. This allowed me to gain experiences in a very broad spectre in areas such as techno-economical evaluations, innovation management, product development/platform concepts, strategic planning, development processes, organizational set-up, people, leadership, market introduction of products, issue resolution, etc. As a special task I was heading an energy transition technology team and worked closely with customers and partners on decarbonization concepts for industrial assets. Solutions based on climate neutral Hydrogen played a key role in these investigations. In April 2020 I became the Senior Vice President for Energy Transition Technologies in a corporate role, helping to shape the portfolio for the future. This includes techno-economical evaluations of energy systems, renewables, etc., complex issue resolutions but also mid-term strategic analysis / scenarios. This role includes also occasional assignments to special tasks with high business relevance in conventional as well as renewable energy business. I am engaged in a variety of external duties, e.g. as vice president of the European association of turbine OEM’s (EUTurbines), vice chair of the board of VDMA power systems and also actively working with policy makers on energy system related challenges. Beside this, I hold a lecture series at the university of Bochum and I am engaged in international conferences, doctoral committees and board of trustees and hold patents related to energy technologies.
