My Time as the Minister of Education for SCNRFP People often ask me how an Iranian became a member of an Indigenous Peoples Nation! It all began with research. Most believe that osteopathy was solely created by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO—but there’s more to the story. As I delved deeper, I discovered that Dr. Still had Indigenous ancestry and spent 20 years as a medical doctor on Shawnee Tribal Reservation land. During that time, he learned Cherokee Bodywork & Healing Arts, which included manual therapy techniques (articular, visceral, and cranial), surgery, botanical medicine, acupuncture, and spiritual and mental health practices. He later refined and systematized the manual therapy aspects into what we now know as osteopathy. However, Dr. Still chose not to publicize osteopathy’s Indigenous roots, likely due to the societal context of his time. Recognizing this, I felt a responsibility to honor and share its true origins with the world. As the most well-known manual osteopath globally and the founder of the largest manual osteopathy school—with alumni in 72 countries—I was in a unique position to spread this knowledge. Today, most manual osteopaths in Canada, the United States, and several other countries are my students. In just a few years, I was able to highlight osteopathy’s deep connection to Indigenous heritage. One of my students, Dr. Daniel Nuzum, served as the Minister of Health for the Southern Cherokee Nation and the Red Fire People. Through him, I was introduced to the Nation’s Chief. I was honored to be welcomed as a SCNRFP tribal member and given the spiritual name "Fly By Falcon", a nod to my Persian name, "Shahin", which means Royal Falcon. Soon after, I was offered the position of Minister of Education for the Southern Cherokee Nation and the Red Fire People. Though I served in this role for some time, I eventually had to step down, as my commitments didn’t allow me to dedicate the full attention the position deserved.
