Borrowing a page from our clients’ entrepreneurial play book, Dave Koch, John Tifford, and I declared our independence and started a new law firm, Plave Koch, in February 2007. Since then, we've grown with good friends and colleagues who have re-joined us from our respective big firms: Regina Amolsch, Leslie Curran, Marisa Faunce, Halima Madjid, Michael Laidhold, Ben Reed, Jim Rubinger, Leslie Pujo, Dave Worthen, and J.H. Snow III. While we all developed our practices in large law firms, we've managed to break free of the big firm constraints quite easily. Working closer than ever with our clients, at reasonable and predictable rates, we’re having the time of our lives. We concentrate on representing franchisors and distributors in U.S. and international transactions, litigation, arbitration, and disputes. Our team also handles domestic and int'l trademark and domain name matters, as well as corporate and commercial transactions. With 3 FTC vets on our team, we also handle FTC matters.

Working with colleagues at the IFA and in presentations to the FASB Board and staff, we helped garner further understanding of the need for more franchise-specific examples of how ASC 606 should be implemented. I co-presented at the ABA Forum on Franchising with FASB Vice Chair Jim Kroeker and Plante Moran Partner Christa LaBrosse and our paper (linked) helped FASB to issue new guidance to help franchisors and their auditors.

Working with colleagues at the IFA and its members, we reached out to FASB to help them understand the overwhelming impact that the original version of FIN46 would have had on the franchising sector. On Dec. 24, 2003, FASB issued FIN 46R - reflecting the changes that we asked them to consider implementing.
