Coetzee (2013), Pratt et al. (2009) and Molote (2000) stated that future research on phosphorus (P) needs to put focus on improving the efficiency of P removal by studying the adsorption and co-precipitation mechanisms within South African soils; especially if the aim is to gain an amended understanding into the variation of relative agronomic effectiveness (RAE) to freshly applied inorganic orthophosphate (OP) and polyphosphate (PP) liquid and granular fertilizers in primary South African production areas. The proposed study will aim to make use of chemical kinetics techniques, geo-chemical modelling as well as surface sensitive technologies such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photon spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy in an attempt to better understand the mechanics of chemical mediated phosphorus availability (Swart et al., 2013; Kouisni et al., 2004; Dias et al., 2003; Lanson, 1997; Sattell, 1989).
