Phil Harvey

Since 2014, my main job responsibility has been to build then run a Diamond Turning Machine (DTM) Lab first at Google and now at Microsoft. In order to create complex and accurate optics, each Lab also included a dedicated Metrology Lab and a High Performance Machine Shop. I have produced many hundreds of custom freeform optics for dozens of projects. The optics include: basic rotationally symmetric lenses, freeform, Fresnel, cylindrical, Alvarez, lenslet arrays, toroidal, prismatic, diffractive, mirrors, as well as other hybrid optics and molds. The main application of these optics are for Smart Glasses, MR, AR, and VR. Optics continues to be an essential facet of consumer hardware and my role is to build prototypes and bridge the gap to production. I help engineers, designers and executives realize value in their designs and to inform product decisions. In additional to diamond turning, my technical experience encompasses holography, roll-to-roll film embossing, electronic development, vacuum metallizing, system integration and troubleshooting, theoretical analysis, optical design, programming, metrology, process development, and fiber optics. I have wide-ranging multidisciplinary experience taking products from concepts through mass-production.
