Commenced railway career in September 1993, as a Signalling & Telecoms Trainee Technician, working for British Rail. Qualified as a Signalling & Telecoms Technician in 1995, passing all technical and safety rail qualifications that were available including the BTEC ONC in Electrical Engineering. Progressed as an active member of the faulting and maintenance team, working up the promotional career ladder to Team leader in August 1999.

In charge of a predominantly three man team, responsible for installing and testing of signalling equipment based in the south east of England. Undertaking installation work as directed whilst constantly adhering to safety critical work regulations as well as complying with quality, safety and environmental instructions. Ensuring relevant paperwork is correct and completed for planned work.

Responsible for a team of three staff providing rapid response to any Signalling or Telecoms faults that occurred on the railway infrastructure in the district. This role also entailed ensuring the safety of the team, whilst leading it in faulting investigations of the signalling equipment on the railway. The equipment ranged from mechanical signals and points to sensitive electrical solid state interlocking. A calm methodical approach was required even when the pressure was on from external sources for the fault to be rectified and the equipment signed back in order.
