PSS are primarily an RMA centre who receive faulty XFX graphics cards from customers and run them through a process of testing, evidence gathering and ultimately return or replacement. My responsibility on this aspect of the business was the maintenance and enhancement of software used to record the data involved in the end-to-end process and to provide a portal for customers to check on the progress of their case. Another function of PSS was bespoke software development so I was involved in the creation of such software and the consultancy process throughout.

Part of a small IT department, specifically the web application development part. We make online portals used by external agencies (solicitors, physiotherapists etc.) to submit medical assessments, invoices and other litigation material through. We also expose a lot of our data for external entities to consume, usually an ASMX web service, XML or JSON transfer (XSLT is sometimes used) or some kind of delimited flat file. Online portals are usually developed using a responsive framework [Bootstrap] and (in some cases) a mobile first approach. The interface is kept responsive with Knockout JS and unit tested with Jasmine or QUnit. We follow common design patterns, factory, command, decorator and repository and work with a mixture of ADO.Net and Entity Framework; because some of our tables map directly to the in-house case management software (Proclaim) there is no normalisation or clustered index on them; therefore they don’t map directly through an ORM; so here we use ADO.Net to hydrate a POCO and then follow a decorator pattern to bring it in-line with the core model.

During my degree I was offered some contract work as a support developer for a .NET WebForms system called ELPHIN; which was an online data repository used by the Department for Work and Pensions. Initially it had been developed and released by the University and I had the responsibility of implementing change requests and various enhancements in addition to supporting and, to a limited extent, training users. I was also responsible for the unmanaged service provided by Rackspace; so a large part of this role was the administration of the web and database server, organising and managing backup schedules, implementing mail services and other ad-hoc duties.
