Patrick Riches
Mechanical Engineer @ AirLift Hovercraft
About
QUT graduate currently working in the defence industry. I hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering, with additional studies in Aerospace Engineering. Passionate about defence, aviation, and other fields. I currently have experience that spans design, simulation, production/manufacturing, safety and quality. I have worked across multiple industries, including: aerospace/aviation, defence, marine, automotive/motorsport (including F1 and MotoGP!) and heavy machinery. In addition to this, I recently completed a final year research project through QUT where I developed a complex CFD model to analyse hydrogen dispersion from compressed storage within a ship, then applied quantitative risk assessment (QRA) methodology to quantify risks before developing appropriate control measures to meet international marine regulatory standards. I am fluent in Russian, and have intermediate level proficiency in Latvian, Farsi (Persian) and French. Key highlights: • Conducted 3D design and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of airframe components using SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS, ensuring compliance with CASA airworthiness regulations and AS1100 standards (MilSpecPPG). • Performed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling and turbulence analysis with Ansys Fluent for hydrogen release and dispersion in cryogenic marine storage (QUT project). • Applied Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and ISO9001/45001/14001 principles during internal audits, ECR/NCR handling, and process optimisation in defence and heavy machinery environments (Commercial Vehicle Group). • Supported UAV concept development, CONOPS, and systems analysis for civil/military applications (QUEST.TECH). • Tutored secondary and first-year university students in maths, physics, and engineering for 9+ years. Open to connecting with professionals in defence industry, aerospace, manufacturing, infrastructure or anyone passionate about engineering.
