Pat Harvey
DBT Parent and Family Coach, Skills Trainer
About
My focus is on supporting and validating parents and other family members who love someone who has intense emotions/emotion dysregulation/mental illness and helping them to learn skills they can use to parent and respond to their loved one effectively and safely. I am also focused on training professionals to create a validating and non-judgmental environment when working with parents and family members of youth, young adults and adults who have emotional challenges while helping those family members to structure an emotionally healthy environment for their family member. I am the co-author of "Parenting a Child Who Has Intense Emotions" (a book for parents), "Dialectical Behavior Therapy for At-Risk Adolescents: A Practitioner's Guide to Treating Challenging Behavior Problems", (a book for professionals about using DBT skills in their work with adolescents and their families), Parenting a Teen Who Has Intense Emotions and a short book called, "Hey, I'm Here Too! A book for Tween/Teen Siblings of a Young Person Kids With Emotional Issues" which was self-published in July, 2014. Specialties: DBT Skills Training, individually and in group, with parents (and siblings) of individuals with emotion dyregulation/mental illness. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a cognitive/behavioral framework that emphasizes acceptance and change. It is an empirically -based structured framework that helps people manage emotions effectively. I have recently redesigned and updated my website, patharveymsw.com, to reflect my focus on working with parents. It has resources, videos and podcasts for parents who have children of any age who have emotional challenges. You can watch a YouTube video of Pat talking about DBT and parenting adolescents and young adults on Therapy Talk (June 12, 2015) by following the link below
