Scientific instruments---such as microscopes, tokamaks, or accelerators---allow us to deploy, capture, measure, and record scientific phenomena. For a Computer Scientist, such experimental instrument is a testbed where new architectures, new algorithms, and new approaches to a variety of problems can be explored at suitable scales. To support Computer Science experiments, ranging from operating system and virtualization research to innovative applications, Chameleon provides a configuration system allowing users to deploy interesting configurations: provisioning of bare metal, support for custom kernel reboot, and console access. Testbed services capture and record every user action: the nodes used in an experiment or the configuration deployed. Users can also capture and measure interesting phenomena using information from fine-grained instrumentation agents developed by the Chameleon team and available on every Chameleon instance. This information gets aggregated and recorded by OpenStack Ceilometer.
