Passionate for innovative solutions for the development of new geomaterials and geotechnical and geoenvironmental problems that might be eco-friendly, cheaper than standard solutions and socially sustainable. Experienced in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and Sustainability, acting on the following subjects: mine tailings stacking (with and without the use of "green" cements), eco-friendly (sustainable) geotechnical solutions, development of new geomaterials (including nanomaterials & novel cements), three pillars of sustainability (life cycle analysis), lab & field soil special tests, constitutive modelling and numerical simulation of special earthworks, and ground improvement technics.

Awarded with Telford Prize (2001) by The Institution of Civil Engineers – UK for best paper published at Géotechnique entitled “Soil formation from tailings: Comparison of predictions and field measurements” & and Telford Premium (2009) for important contribution to Engineering literature published at Ground Improvement entitled “Uplift of shallow foundations with cement stabilised backfill”. Has 308 peer reviewed papers on the ISI Web of Science (9281 citations and h-index = 54), and 305 peer reviewed papers on SCOPUS (10502 citations and h-index = 57). Author of the book Pathology of Foundations. Invited speaker at several universities, including Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, University of Bristol, University College London, University of Western Australia, & Nanjing University. Innovation consultant for VALE (Brazilian mining company) & PETROBRAS (Brazilian oil company).
