Nicolas Ingle

As an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) with the JET Program, I have the opportunity to work with students at 16 elementary and junior high schools in Muroran, Hokkaido. I work closely with local Japanese teachers to support the development of English language skills among students ranging from 3rd year ES to 3rd year JHS. Key Responsibilities: •Language Instruction: Assist in the planning and delivery of English lessons, incorporating engaging activities and multimedia to encourage active participation and language acquisition. •Cultural Exchange: Foster cross-cultural understanding by introducing students to aspects of global culture, American customs, and international perspectives through the English language. •Classroom Support: Provide individual and small group support to students, helping to build confidence and fluency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. •Collaborative Teaching: Partner with Japanese teachers to design and execute interactive, student-centered lessons and activities that align with the national curriculum. In addition to my role in the classroom, I provide translation and interpretation support for the sister city relationship between Muroran and Knoxville, TN, strengthening cross-cultural ties. Key Responsibilities: •Translation & Interpretation: Translate both written and oral communications for city officials and local organizations to facilitate smooth interactions between English and Japanese speakers. •Cultural Liaison: Support the exchange of cultural initiatives and collaborative projects between Muroran and Knoxville, TN, enhancing diplomatic and community ties. I also brief students preparing to study abroad in Knoxville, providing insights into local customs and helping them navigate interactions with their host families. This experience has enhanced my language skills, cultural awareness, and ability to foster international relationships, contributing to stronger ties between Japan and the U.S.

As the Block Advisor for the Iburi sub-prefecture in Hokkaido, I currently support over 30 Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) across the region. In this role, I provide essential guidance and assistance to help ALTs succeed both professionally and personally while they are living and working in Japan. Key Responsibilities: •Support for ALTs: Served as the primary point of contact for ALTs in the Iburi Block, offering assistance with job-related concerns, classroom management, and cultural adaptation. •Onboarding & Settling In: Helped new ALTs settle into life in Japan by advising on housing, transportation, and local customs, ensuring a smooth transition to their new environment. •Event Coordination & Community Engagement: Curated and share lists of local events and activities, encouraging ALTs to engage with the local community and build connections with fellow expats. In this role, I strove to ensure that ALTs felt well-supported both personally and professionally, enhancing their experience in Japan and contributing to a fulfilling and successful time abroad.

Worked as a seasonal Data Entry Specialist. Responsible for working within the command center daily to locate rental properties within each community and verifying DOI Quarters Program qualification. Compared field collected rental housing comparable information with other public sources for agreement. Conducted statistical sampling of all comparable collections and contacted original sources to verify information.

Worked as an undergraduate researcher in the lab of David G. Lynn, PhD at Emory University. Performed research investigating the reaction diffusion network of Sorghum under Olga Taran, PhD. Performed research on a congener of the nucleating core of Alzheimer's disease which involved designing and surveying structural information for potential functionalization under PhD candidate Christella Gordon.

Undergraduate teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 at both Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University. Responsibilities included prepping reagents for each week, answering student questions, and running infrared and UV/Vis spectroscopy for students.

Observed a variety of surgical procedures at the University of Tennessee Medical Center as a student learner under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Chun, M.D and Dr. Greg Mancini, M.D. Was allowed to accompany the doctor on some patient consultations.

Worked as a seasonal Forestry Technician apprentice checking traps that had been set out in April to detect the presence of the invasive insect species emerald ash borer (EAB) in Tennessee, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Trap placement was determined using a survey sampling design collaboratively developed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the Forest Service’s Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team. Correctly identifed emerald ash borer samples submitted from other Forestry Technicians, prepared sample tracking forms and submitted samples for confirmation at approved APHIS laboratories. Inventoried survey supplies and equipment at the end of each season.
