Associate Tutor in Japanese Language and English Literature

Freelance writer and photographer, working for various Japanese companies on a wide variety of creative jobs. This position required a deep understanding of Japanese culture and business as well as the ability to deliver high quality work to demanding deadlines. My role at JTB provided me with a huge amount of experience in travel journalism, including copywriting, translation, editing and website design among others. A great deal of self-organisation was required to balance activities such as making travel arrangements, writing and editing articles, travel and engaging efficiently with customers in order to understand fully their requirements. -Planning, writing and editing travel articles -Organising travel assignments and working in varied environments and whilst on the road -Dealing with a diverse range of customers and collaborators with unique creative requirements -All aspects of professional travel photography -Designing copy and artistic arrangement of articles -Website planning and initial design

During this short-term contract I worked as a translator and writer with a key role in translating video games from the original Japanese into English. A high degree of creative talent was required in addition to the translation work in order to achieve a finished product with both a high standard of translation as well as the corresponding cultural relevance. -Provision of the highest quality translation -Creative contribution to final product, including the creation of names, ‘new’ words and terms for the game -Coordination with Japanese developers and European counterparts -Cross-cultural communication with other European language teams working in parallel -Quality management and best-practice

Upon returning to the UK I worked at Honda’s European production plant in the UK in the New Model Centre. I had a unique role at Honda – taking part in an experimental appointment that aimed to take in non-technical but highly proficient English-Japanese linguists to improve communications between Japan and the UK during the introduction of new models into production in the UK. -Introducing manufacturing processes of new model cars into the UK plant -Ordering parts from and liaising with Japanese suppliers -Coordinating meetings and technical evaluations -Responsibility for shipping cars and bodies -Meetings at all levels with suppliers and service providers

After university I went to live in Japan for four years, working as an English teacher in four Junior High Schools in Hiroshima Prefecture. I very much enjoyed the huge exposure to the Japanese language and culture as well as linguistic and general pedagogy. This immersion in the country, people and language was the beginning of my route to proficiency in both written and oral Japanese. -Hands-on teaching experience across four different schools -Teacher training -Planning and coordinating English camps for students -Public speaking in both English and Japanese
