My dad and I used to go on long drives across the state in our Honda City, with my mom blissfully sleeping in the back seat. These journeys were more than just drives; they were a canvas for vibrant conversations spanning photography, airplanes, puzzles, and the plethora of TED talks he introduced me to. He never involved himself much with my “academic” subjects except coding, yet somehow, he remains my favorite teacher. A veteran of the Air Force, he possessed a wealth of knowledge about aircraft and engines, so he taught me. He had a camera, knew how it worked and how to use it, so he taught me. He knew how to make toy windmills and toy boats, so he taught me. He never said he knew it all, but he told me that nobody really did and that I can always learn or discover it, emphasizing that knowledge is limitless and always within reach. Those car rides were my foundation, sparking my love for learning and problem-solving. I’m curious and will spend an irrational number of hours on topics that interest me.
