A lawyer by profession, and a former judge of the High Court of Fiji, Nazhat Shameem is currently Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. She is a citizen of Fiji, and obtained her tertiary education in the United Kingdom. She holds a BA Law Hons. from Sussex University, an LLM from Cambridge University, an MPHIL (Criminology) from Cambridge University, and is a barrister of Inner Temple London. She practised as a prosecutor in Fiji from 1984 to 1999. She is a former Director of Public prosecutions of Fiji. She was appointed to the High court Bench in 1999. She served as a judge for 10 years, then opened her own practice in Fiji. She was engaged in training lawyers, judges and the business community as well as non-government organisations on litigation skills, governance, human rights law and practice, criminal law and practice, HIV law, legal ethics and gender competence in the justice system.

My responsibilities included hearing civil cases (from 1999 to 2002) and criminal trials and appeals (2002 to 2009). I also chaired the National Judicial Education Committee for the Chief Justice, and chaired the Fiji Law Reports Editorial Committee in 2000 and 2001. I launched and implemented case management of the criminal courts in Fiji from 2002 to 2009. At various times during my 10 years at the judiciary, I chaired the Criminal Justice Council, and the Advisory Council of the Institute of Judicial and Legal Studies at the University of the South Pacific.

My responsibilities were to ensure that no person in Fiji was prosecuted without sufficient evidence and in the public interest. I launched the first ever Fiji Prosecution Code and Prosecution Policy in 1995, and set in train a National Prosecution Service to ensure uniformity in prosecution standards in Fiji, under the supervision of the DPP. I also opened the DPP's Serious Fraud Unit, and the DPP's Sexual Offences Unit to ensure in-house specialisation of prosecution skills. I chaired the National Children's Coordination Committee from 1994 to 1999.
