Co-authored a systematic review on the impact of preoperative patient education on outcomes for spine surgery Authored a perspective piece on the promise of patient navigation in spine disease Collaborated with patients and care providers through hospital visits and telephone check-ins to identify and support patient care goals, mobile health utilization, and postoperative concerns

Led a research initiative on school nutrition policy adoption across NC’s 100 public school districts to focus a non-profit’s advocacy efforts and expand access to free school meals programs state-wide. My team ultimately produced a 100-page landscape review of local and state policy. Sourced, organized, and launched eight, year-long, community outreach projects placing 40+ students on project teams with NC healthcare advocacy groups to address local health disparities through research, service, and advocacy. Developed volunteer pipelines connecting students to Duke University and North Carolina-associated healthcare benefit organizations

Studied the role of Apolipoprotein db on host susceptibility to M. marinum infection, granuloma morphology, and leukocyte response. This work ultimately comprised my undergraduate thesis, "Host factors in mycobacterial infection: uncovering the role of Apolipoprotein db," awarded distinction by the Duke University Biology department Undergraduate lab assistant for Dr. Erika Hughes of the Duke Tobin Lab

I led an initiative to build and actively maintain a network of over 500 NC cancer center patient and nurse navigators to reduce administrative barriers to care during the patient hospital transfer process Built data collection tools and an online database, in collaboration with four undergraduates and three healthcare professionals, to be integrated into Duke Health’s online website and accessed by stakeholders across the North Carolina cancer center ecosystem

Developed and presented a comprehensive deal pitch to senior management to assess potential investment in a ~$1bn mkt. cap. biotech company with a base case target for 3x ROI Performed basic financial valuation through creating and updating top-down revenue forecasts, three-statement models, discounted cash flows, and sensitivity table analyses Engaged in management presentations for new ventures and existing portfolio companies

This program is a freshman-only, first semester course of study focused on foundational and emerging concepts within the areas of genetics and genome research. My coursework revolved around ethical considerations of genome research as well as techniques in computational biology. Additionally, I attended weekly seminars featuring presentations by world leaders in genome sciences. These courses, and the insights learned from conversations with FOCUS professors, are what have inspired me to further explore intersections between STEM and policy.
