Naomi Wieser, PhD

Preclinical Scientist @ OM Pharma

About

I'm a scientist who is interested in understanding how bacteria affect our health, women's health and translating these findings into innovation.Focusing on nutrition and development, my PhD was a deep dive into how the neonatal gut and microbiome develop together, using multiomics to track tryptophan metabolism from the earliest days of life. A lot of time was spent growing intestinal organoids, wrangling NGS data in R, combiner with nutritional inputs and trying to make sense of what the microbiome was contributing in the first years of life. It was messy, fascinating work and it gave me a real appreciation for how much we still don't understand about mucosal immunology. Throughout this PhD I published 4 peer-reviewed reasearch articles!Since then I've moved into industry as a Preclinical Scientist at OM Pharma in Geneva. I manage accademic and GLP studies in mucosal immunology, work on biomarker strategies for clinical trials (Phase I-III), and collaborate cross-functionnaly with clinical, medical affaire and regulatory teams on bacterial lysates. What I find most exciting is when preclinical data starts informing clinical decisions. Dual Swiss-American, based in Geneva. Volleyball player since before I could analyze a dataset! I believe collaboration is the key to good research.

As a Preclinical Scientist at OM Pharma, I am involved in advancing the development of bacterial lysates for therapeutic applications. Study design with accademic partners and CROs, my responsibilities center around generating and interpreting preclinical data that supports the company's innovative pipeline. I collaborate cross-functionally with research teams, product development and regulatory experts to ensure that our findings are aligned with both scientific and strategic goals. Furthermore, I am involved with the selecrion and validation of targets in clinical trials (P1-P3) in accordance to the company's objectives. With a deep understanding of preclinical models and data analysis, I contribute to the translation of cutting-edge research into clinical potential.

PhD program at the University of Amsterdam and Imperial College of London. In collaborations with Gut Research. My project focused on the benefits of Human milk on the development of neonatal gut. Using both metabolomics and 16S data, I analysed the metabolism of Typtophan by both the host and the microbiome. Furthermore, I investigated the effects of such metabolites on epithelial cell immunological activity. Skills: mammalian cell culture, multiomics data anaysis, 2D and 3D organoid cultuiing, co-culturing, microbiology and metabolomics.
