Nancy Martin, Ph.D, P.Eng.

I provide water quality expertise to internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory approval requirements and to proactively assess risks to the watershed. My work has the lens of protecting the aquatic life and Calgary's drinking water source.

- Provided technical support to facilitate science-based decisions regarding water allocation, environmental impact assessments, and municipal and industrial discharges in the South Saskatchewan Basin, with a particular focus on the Bow, Elbow, Highwood, and Sheep River sub-basins. - Subject matter expert on water quality models that help characterize environmental impacts. - Contract manager, overseeing technical projects aimed at developing and enhancing modeling tools. - Contributed to regional planning initiatives, such as the Bow River Phosphorus Management Plan, by using models to assess cumulative impacts and assimilative capacity. - Participated in water quality technical teams and policy initiatives.

Seasonal/part-time job during my PhD studies Fall 2008, CIVE220: Environmental Measurements (undergrad). I helped to troubleshoot and advise students in laboratory experiments. I also reviewed their lab reports. Fall 2009 & 2010, CIVE620: Water Treatment (graduate). I helped in the selection of the assignments and marked them. Winter 2010, 2011 & 2012 , ENVE 440: Design Facility (undergrad). I advised students during their wastewater design project. Lecturer for a 2-day workshop about the use of the wastewater treatment design software BioWin.

I was a member of the provincial industrial approval group at Jalisco's Environmental Ministry, which is the second largest province in Mexico. My responsibilities included reviewing applications related to industrial facilities, assessing their processes, environmental impacts, and control mechanisms. Occasionally, I conducted inspections to assist in evaluating these applications. Based on binding regulations, I wrote the approvals for the facilities. Additionally, I reviewed annual reports that included various technical documents and sampling programs. The information from these reports was used to update a provincial database of point source emissions. In the event of a contingency, we contacted major polluters to implement contingency plans.

I taught two undergraduate courses for the Environmental Engineering program: Air Quality in the Fall term and Air Pollution Management and Control in the Winter term. Each course had approximately 20 students. My responsibilities, which required about 10 hours per week, included preparing and delivering lectures, designing and grading assignments and exams, managing online resources through Moodle, instructing lab experiments related to air pollution control technology, and reporting course results to the Program Coordinator.

DIMA is a well-recognized sampling laboratory located in western Mexico, primarily focused on air pollution, noise, and vibration testing. The company had a small number of employees, which allowed me to gain experience in various areas. I prepared industrial approval applications and developed a broad understanding of both federal and provincial regulations. This involved collecting process information, identifying emission sources, detailing control equipment, and calculating total emissions. Additionally, I prepared technical reports related to point and non-point source air emissions, including particles, CO, CO2, NOx, and SO2. I also conducted other technical reports, such as risk assessments. During my time at the company, I worked in the laboratory performing gravimetric, colorimetric, and other tests. Once a year, we participated in the laboratory re-certification process, focusing on improving the quality control of our internal processes.

PhD student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. I developed a model and assessed passive samplers to support water quality management in the Athabasca River.

I completed my undergrad in Environmental Engineering with minor in Chemical Engineering. My undergrad provided a good foundation on water quality, air quality and control, wastewater treatment, waste management and environmental impact assessment. I graduated top of my class in a time record. Additionally, during my undergrad I ran a small business that allowed me to pay for my tuition and fees.
