ABD Research Work
Baltimore, Maryland Area
Research work on Dynamic Term Structure Model, intended to investigate the effects on interest rates of the Federal Reserve's Quantitative Easing (QE) monetary policy in a zero-short-rate environment. o Familiar with all kinds of fixed-income pricing models; constructed a mathematical framework that calculates bond prices based on Treasury supply and the proximity to the zero lower bound, which is an improvement upon the conventional affine term structure models; constructed a dataset of monthly net treasury holdings of the public in different maturity brackets since 1980, with raw data from CRSP database and individual copies of Monthly Statement of Public Debt. Run correlation tests investigating the relationships between treasury supply and hundreds of different economic variables looking for instrumental variables for treasury supply. Implemented unscented Kalman Filter technique to estimate the model empirically. Performed sophisticated statistical and econometric analysis utilizing expert skills in Stata, Matlab and Excel. o Picked up necessary stochastic calculus knowledge in one week; ploughed through US Treasury and Federal Reserve websites and dozens of papers and book chapters for institutional details on treasury issuance procedures in the primary market and System Open Market Account (SOMA) operations in the secondary market; read hundreds of papers looking for possible ways to identify exogenous shocks to treasury supply, including defense spending shocks, tax policy changes, various uncertainty/risk measurements, investors’ risk appetite readings, and certain composite economic activity indices. Gained a broad knowledge of US monetary policy and treasury security market, as well as the recent financial crisis in this process. o Discussed research-related questions with Professors regularly both in person and by exchanging emails, drafted reports at various stages of research, made presentations at various seminars.
