About
Monica Polo is a Toronto-based sustainability professional and researcher whose work connects environmental design, behaviour change, and wellbeing. With a background rooted in applied sustainability and creative design practice, Monica focuses on expressing complex environmental goals into practical, human-centred solutions for everyday life. Her professional and academic work emphasizes that lasting sustainability depends not only on technology, but on how people experience, understand, and adopt change within their homes, families and communities. Monica’s research investigates accessible sustainable domestic practices through the lens of behavioural science, experiential learning, and the WELL Building Standard, integrating models such as B.J. Fogg’s Tiny Habits to better understand how habits form and endure. Her graduate thesis represents the culmination of this journey. Through uniting lived experience, academic survey, and personal values, she hopes to examine how thoughtfully designed environments, and accessible solutions, can support family wellbeing while enabling meaningful, long-term sustainable behaviour change.

Understanding that the most impact we can have on this planet, is through the events, and choices we make daily, we at #ecoapt offer you a space that provides options. Organic personal products, bidet, microgreens, and sprouts on site, healthy material finishes, lots of natural light and a 5min link to a walking city (or ease of transit), we hope to inspire our visitors to new ways of making some of these choices. (with the backup of traditional solutions to make the transition one of fun, rather than apprehension). We invite you to look around and see if your next stay in TO might be one that can change the way you think about sustainable living, or enhance the good choices you are already making. Our goal is to make learning fun for you, and make your experience special for you.

After working in sustainable and optimal design material education and health for over 20years, and, after watching my son go through one of the hardest challenges of his life, it dawned on my that health, exposure and toxic materials in our interiors, and sustainable choices was something that we can change. Moving the direction from disaster-ism towards education, innovation and finding a solution, especially for the age group with the most to loose (our children and teens) ecomomica plans to take the natural systems that have worked for us for many years, ie. the nutrient cycle, water cycle and how we deal with power, materials and processing, and paint these with a brush that is held in the hands of a child. Do we flush with potable water? why? Can we grow some of our own food? how? When we bring these systems we use everyday, through the eyes of a child, we see just how convoluted and over complicated we have made this process. Ecomomica wants to take these systems and make them accessible to all.

Healthier Materials and Sustainable Buildings
This 4-course online learning program explains the relationship between building materials and the human body and how the choices we make as designers can change people’s lives. The first course in the program gives an introduction to human health and the effects of toxins on our bodies, material basics and what contributes to indoor environment air quality. Course 2 presents toxicity and hazards and the impact of green chemistry on innovation in the chemical industry. Course 3 outlines the paths to designing healthier built environments, from defining health and project goals to finding healthier products. Finally, in Course 4 the discussion surrounds the creation of a framework to facilitate the implementation and execution of healthier products, enabling change making and changemakers!
