Master Thesis in Soil Nutrients Sensing for Precision Agriculture

Chemical fertilizers have been applied to soil as essential sources of nutrients for intensive agricultural production. But the excessive use of these substances can lead to runoff of nutrients into surface and ground water, causing an environmental impact. Accumulation of nutrients in excess of crop needs may also increase the potential for eutrophication of surface waters. Standard laboratory methods for measurement of soil nutrients use various procedures and instruments to analyze soil samples taken from the field and transported to the laboratory. Concerns with these procedures range from delays in measurement time, the high cost of soil sampling and analysis, and the need to aggregate samples. With recent advances in using ISE (Ion-Selective Electrode) soil nutrients can now be measured directly, rapidly, accurately, at low cost, at a fine scale, and in real-time right in the field. This thesis work aims towards designing and simulating conditioning circuit for 8 sensors (ISE), Realizing of the hardware, testing and characterizing the hardware and comparing the results with commercial ion meter, ISFET (Ion-Selective Field Effect Transistor), and spectrophotometer results. Main tasks • Simulation (Conditioning circuit and motor board Simulation using LTspice) • Hardware design and development (PCB design and development using Altium Designer; PCB soldering ) • Software development (Embedded Software development for 32-bit Arm Cortex-M3 PSoC 5LP microcontroller): Firmware for reading external analog-to-digital converter and component control using SPI, UART, GPIO interfaces • Statistical analysis for the results: Implementation of mathematical methods for signal processing at microcontroller level • Implementation of communication protocol for data exchange between microcontroller and GUI on the computer
