mentor and tutor
siue trio upward bound
I acted as a mentor and tutor for high school students participating in the Upward Bound program for one semester. Twice a week after school, I went to South Charleston High School to tutor students in physical science, math, chemistry, and Spanish. I also helped with organization and study skills and gave the students a positive role model to look up to. I filled out status updates at the end of each tutoring session, and kept track of student progress.

I began taking care of wet lab duties such as monitoring, feeding, and caring for rainbow trout in recirculating, temperature controlled systems. I also participated in monthly sampling of the fish which included handling the fish and weighing, measuring, and dissecting for tissue collections. I learned techniques on making buffers and following existing protocol for mitochondrial isolation and RNA extraction (from liver, muscle, and intestine). I began making my own cDNA and running RT- PCR. I also started an independent research project isolating the mitochondria from kidney, heart, and brain tissue to quantify total mitochondria protein concentrations and enzyme activity.
