The role of finance manager Exploration New Business Development has brought me clear insight in the opportunity realisation process, a good feel for commercial decision making and the challenges Upstream is faced with when it comes to portfolio decision making. Being part of a senior Leadership team like the Upstream commercial Leadership team provides insight in high level commercial issues. The scope of the role covers finance support for commercial and new business development for Upstream (International) and exploration. On top of that I executed the directorships for two Integrated Gas ventures: Attiki (Greek gas distribution venture) and NoordzeeWind (Dutch wind venture) focusing on governing Shell's interest in the general management of the company.

Shell Nederland BV (SN) is the parent company for various NL Operating Companies, such as NAM and Shell Nederland Raffinaderij (SNR). It is a structured legal entity with a Supervisory Board with both Shell and external board members. In 2009 SN had a consolidated statutory result of EUR 1.2 bln and equity of EUR 4.2 bln. The main focus of the entity is the Payroll, Employee Benefits and Pension administration for all staff in the Netherlands. As the Controller I am responsible for SN and the NL pension scheme accounting, Group Reporting, Statutory reporting and providing Finance support to the NL Country chair and NL HR. I have recently coordinated the offshoring of accounting activities from the NL team to the shared service centres in Glasgow and Chennai.

As MI & Planning analyst of the Exploration and Production Service Companies (EP ServCo) I was accountable for the coordination of the annual EP ServCo Plan and Budget, for providing management information to facilitate EP ServCo and EP Technical performance management and for liaisons with the Shell Shared Service Centre in Manila. EP ServCo is an at-cost company with an annual budget of US $ 2.8 mln. Main achievements: (i) definition and implementation of EPT performance dashboard enabling Executive Vice President/Vice President level appraisal discussions and ensuring alignment with EP Global Reporting, (ii) EP ServCo budget process simplification, (iii) taking over roles and responsibilities of the Head of MI & Planning while in the process of resourcing and (iv) leading a project team of 4 people setting guidelines and improve the EP ServCo Records Management.

The Upstream world-class finance project aims to provide the process improvements and organisational structure changes and migration efforts needed to enable delivery of the targets that have been set by the CFO in the Finance Functional Plan by 2010. Several work streams were set up to focus on the various processes within Finance. I was participated in the project team that needed to focus on Business Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting (including Latest estimate). When the project progressed it was divided in two separte workstreams, one for Business Planning and one for Budgeting and Forecasting. I became project lead for the Budgeting and Forecasting workstream.

The Dutch State Lottery facilitates 14 lottery games per year, generating turnover of some EUR 750 mln. I was mainly engaged in operational audits, auditing all processes within the organisation. Main achievements were (i) leading a project team of 7 people to compose all company process descriptions, delivering the project on time and within budget, (ii) solving critical control issues for the ticketing organisation and (iii) delivering audit work within existing frameworks (COSO, KAD) but also focusing on soft controls relating to people and environment.

PricewaterhouseCoopers is a global financial services company. In 2003 I was promoted to Assistant Manager in Assurance and Business Advisory Services. I was responsible for (i) teams of 1 to 5 people for audit projects lasting 1 to 5 weeks, (ii) client contact and (iii) professional advice on Dutch GAAP and US GAAP issues (also experience with IFRS, Sarbanes Oxley and UK GAAP).
