Min Thu Rein Soe
Energy Systems and Infrastructure Mentor @ Youth for Energy Southeast Asia (Y4E-SEA)
About
Hi, I am Min - an Electrical and Renewable Energy professional specialising in solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), power electronics, and power systems, with 6+ years of hands-on experience at INGOs and international companies across the UK and Southeast Asia. I hold an IET-accredited master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems from the University of Leeds (UK) and am proud to be a Chevening Scholar (2024–25). My solid expertise includes successful design and implementation of solar PV and BESS projects across residential, commercial and industrial sectors, covering the full lifecycle: site surveys, system sizing, simulation, electrical design, BOM and cost estimation, preparing quotations, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and O&M. I also bring my strong utility-side experience from MV/HV substation and power line constructions for national grid expansion projects, preparing me a strong foundation in both distributed energy systems and utility-scale power system networks. I am always open to collaborations in renewable energy, BESS, EV infrastructure, grid modernisation and international energy projects, as I am passionate about leveraging engineering, sustainability, and innovative solutions to drive positive change, particularly in global contexts.

Energy Systems and Infrastructure Mentor
Youth in Energy Mentorship Programme 2025 • Mentored young energy professionals from Southeast Asia to gain professional insights, strengthen their career pathways in energy, climate, and sustainability, and amplify their contribution to Southeast Asia's energy transition. • Delivered in-depth training on project management, stakeholder engagement, and renewable energy technologies with technical insights into how energy systems are built and modernised. • Shared real-world advice and inspired experiences through my renewable energy projects. • Guided career advice, skill-building tips, and sector knowledge of energy systems and infrastructure. • Cultivated critical thinking and leadership skills, empowering participants to confidently contribute to the energy transition and engage with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Project Associate - Industrial Engagement during Master’s Studies
Castleford, England, United Kingdom
Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) Project as part of the Boston Spa Energy Efficiency Trial (BEET) • Designed and implemented detailed simulation models of power electronics-based household loads, including laptop and electric vehicle (EV) on-board chargers (flyback, conventional, interleaved, and totem-pole AC/DC power factor correction (PFC) topologies) using MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS, integrating PI and PR control systems for voltage and current regulation. • Developed and simulated battery charging systems for the laptops and EVs under CVR conditions, applying constant-current/constant-voltage (CC–CV) charging methods and analysing battery behaviour across different charging rates and capacities. • Conducted parametric simulations using SiC MOSFET-based power converter models to quantify changes in power consumption, efficiency, losses and energy savings under varying input voltage levels, identifying energy savings of ~ 0.02 – 1% per 1% voltage reduction. • Engaged with EV manufacturing companies to obtain advanced technical data on on-board charger and battery topologies, supporting model validation and enabling recommendations for EV charging and grid interaction. • Analysed CVR factors across different charger topologies, identifying how certain EV converter types enhance or limit voltage optimisation benefits within UK distribution networks. • Delivered technical insights to the NPg’s Smart Grid Development team on how the different household loads impact CVR effectiveness, supporting data-driven decisions for CVR implementation strategies and the integration of emerging electronic loads.

Productive Use of Energy (PUE) Engineer
Myanmar, Cambodia, France
Productive Use of Renewable Energy Project • Designed and installed over 30 solar PV and battery energy storage systems for commercial and industrial applications, securing optimal sizing and cost-effective retrofit designs tailored to beneficiary needs and reducing energy costs by 30 – 60%. (Example systems: commercial mills, industrial workshops, refrigeration, irrigation, village water supply, rural business electrification, etc.) • Prepared detailed project cost estimates, bill of materials (BOM) and tender quotations, supporting accurate project budgeting. • Developed technical specifications, procurement strategies and supplier contracts in compliance with industry and safety standards. • Conducted Comparative Bidding Analyses (CBA) and PV system design evaluations to support investment decisions. • Led cross-functional collaboration with international experts, local stakeholders, beneficiaries and partner organisations. • Managed simultaneous field implementation and O&M operations, including surveying, installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. • Collected power and energy consumption data from operational sites for system monitoring and performance evaluation. • Authored technical reports, narrative reports, field reports, climate reports and training materials on safety, user operation, and troubleshooting for the 30+ solar installation projects. • Developed carbon accounting tools and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) tools. • Performed risk assessments to ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and system-reliability requirements. • Achieved the project completion 10% ahead of schedule through effective project planning and cross-functional collaboration.
