Concluding the work from my 2014 summer internship - an in-depth flow field analysis of a turbulent heavy liquid metal flow-field inside a triangular fuel rod bundle. The work was presented as a conference paper (co-authored by Matej Tekavčič and Ivo Kljenak) at the 25th International Conference NENE - Nuclear Energy for New Europe.

During my internship at the Laboratory for Water and Turbune Machines (LVTS), I took part in collaboration project with the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at the Ohio State University. My contact during this period was Zongsu Wei. The goal of the collaboration was to simulate the ultrasonic cavitation in wastewater (sludge) treatment using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. The simulation was carried out exclusively in OpenFOAM, an open-source CFD environment. A simplified (pure water, isothermal, non-compressible flow without phase transition) 2D working model was created, using the dynamic meshing alorithm implemented in OpenFOAM. The simulated velocity and pressure field proved to be in qualitative agreement with experimental data, provided by Wei. Future work on the subject includes: model expansion into 3D, inclusion of compressibility and phase transition models and finally changing the working fluid to a non-Newtonian one.

MSWS (Modelling of a hydraulic standing wave for the purposes of water sports) is a project that ran from February to September 2014. The project was funded from by the Slovenian human resources development and scholarship fund (ARRS) and the European Union. Taking part in this project were ten students from University of Ljubljana, two professors mentors and one professional/business mentor from Slovenian company HESS d.o.o. - nine from the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, mainly from water management and environmental engineering, and one from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The main challenge of project is to design a hydraulic weir structure, able to create a standing hydraulic wave of water suitable for water sports like surfing. Responsibilities: 3D modelling and simulation of free surface flow using open source software. Experimental model validation.
