Michael Tsepelis
Public Health Inspector Student - Safe Water & Beach Monitoring @ Niagara Region Public Health
About
I began my academic career at Western University in the Medical Sciences program before refining my focus toward the intersection of biological and environmental systems. I completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Geography and Environment, where I developed a strong foundation in microbiology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, genetics, organismal physiology, and biogeography. My academic work emphasized understanding how biological systems interact with environmental processes to influence ecosystem health and public health outcomes. I am now in my final year pursuing an accelerated Bachelor of Applied Science in Public Health at Toronto Metropolitan University, working toward certification as a Certified Public Health Inspector (CPHI(C)) through the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. This training integrates scientific principles with applied environmental health practice, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and evidence-based decision-making in regulatory contexts. At Toronto Metropolitan University, my academic work focuses on public health disciplines including epidemiology of infectious diseases, toxicology, and environmental health. These areas build upon the foundations in biology, chemistry, and environmental health sciences that I developed at Western. My professional focus is grounded in the application and enforcement of public health legislation and standards, including the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA), Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS), Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA), Environmental Protection Act (EPA), and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). I have developed working knowledge in areas such as safe water systems, food safety inspection, vector-borne disease surveillance, and infection prevention and control, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance and public risk communication. I am particularly interested in environmental health protection as it relates to water quality, vector ecology, and emerging public health risks. My goal is to contribute to Canada’s public health system through rigorous inspection practices, strong regulatory literacy, and a commitment to protecting population health and environmental sustainability.
