Michael is closely involved in both the ESG and Commodities Trading space through Nature & Environmental Solutions in Shell - comprising both the Nature Based Solutions business as well as our Environmental Products Trading business. Previously supporting the Environmental Products Trading business in Asia-Pac as their sole legal counsel for the first 7 years of his Shell career, he now directly and indirectly manages a culturally diverse and global team of lawyers spanning Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas dedicated to investments in both Nature Based and non-Nature Based carbon initiatives which is an integral part of Shell's Net Carbon Footprint goals (eg. financing, M&A and other investments in carbon projects and technology) as well as the trading (spot, short term and long term) and optimisation of Shell's portfolio of carbon credits/allowances (both voluntary and compliance) in markets across the globe. Michael also actively arranges for and coordinates legal support from various other locations within Shell, working effectively with his colleagues and external counsel to effectively and economically scale up legal support to the businesses his team supports as well as other related businesses in Shell which require input/support on carbon related initiatives. He believes strongly in working seamlessly across global teams and actively sharing knowledge to benefit the whole rather than benefitting in silos.
