Work with the underprivileged population on a variety of legal issues including unemployment hearings, deferment of student loans, estate planning, assistance with social security benefits, Section 8 Housing, and credit card and tax debt. Perform client intake, write letters to clients and third parties, write administrative appeals briefs, and communicate daily with a variety of local and federal agencies.

Interviewed and counseled children and their families in preparation for hearings. Examined witnesses and negotiated with opposing counsel when appropriate to reach a fair disposition. Wrote and argued legal Motions and researched and prepared defenses based on legal principles.

Researched, drafted, and revised memorandum and orders responding to pleadings. Reviewed complaints for jurisdictional and procedural defects and issued Orders to Show Cause accordingly. Observed and discussed court proceedings with Judge Gutierrez.

Through the AmeriCorps VISTA program, facilitated capacity building and sustainability at a grassroots agency whose mission is to help homeless and working poor become self-sufficient. Wrote grants, managed fundraising events and formed auxiliary to inaugurate an annual fundraiser.

Filed incoming documents, assembled oral argument calendar, and responded to inquiries at the front desk and by phone.

Drafted and transcribed discovery documents, assisted with calendaring and other tasks as needed. Supervised office organization and mail processing.

Responded to constituent concerns, wrote news article summaries and researched public relations issues.

Gave lectures and tours to special guests, foreign delegations, and the general public. Conducted research for the visitor programming and curator’s office. Wrote and edited the docent newsletter.
