About
I am a lecturer, researcher, and organizer, focusing on critical race and digital studies. For the last 4.5 years, I have been leading the ‘Ban the Scan’ campaign, Amnesty International’s research and advocacy efforts on banning facial recognition technologies and exposing their uses against racialized communities, from New York City to the occupied Palestinian territories. My roster of work includes documenting and exposing repressive deployments of AI in law enforcement and the military, and supporting the development of Amnesty International's generative AI research and policy. I hold a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where I studied technological marginalisation of refugees and migrants in "smart" cities, as the inaugural Jo Cox PhD Scholar. There, I continue to teach ‘Control and Resistance in Digital Societies’, as an Affiliated Lecturer in Sociology My work appears in The Sociological Review, International Political Sociology, Digital Witness (Oxford Uni. Press, 2020), Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence (Haymarket, 2024), and in my forthcoming book, Migrants in the Digital Periphery: New Urban Frontiers of Control (Uni. Of California Press, February 2025).

Program Lead on The Whistle project (PI: Dr Ella McPherson)

The Whistle is a digital human rights reporting project that aims to help civilian witnesses connect with human rights NGOs. I contribute to our research surrounding civilian witness reporting and verification through extensive exploration of actors and practices in the digital human rights field, and make connections with human rights oriented NGOs and academic projects. I contribute actively to research and mapping of actors and organizations, liaising with partner NGOs, co-ordinating volunteers, and developing UI/UX visualizations.
