Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, acquired Connections Education in 2011. The acquired entity continues to operate online virtual public schools in 21 states in the US and serves more than 40,000 students. Led a cross functional team of engineering, architecture, user experience, and quality management teams tasked with delivering a new version of Connexus (v3) – a cloud-based, globally and linearly scalable, microservice based Education Management System with a first-in-class user experience that supports a wide range of instructional models for learners in all geographies with a predictable, linear, and cost-effective infrastructure model.  Worked across all lines of business to craft product and technology roadmaps via market research, competitive analysis, customer feedback, and value stream mapping.  Oversaw a 150+ person software development organization responsible for the creation and maintenance of internal and customer facing software applications.  Managed a $15M+ annual budget, including overall organizational software capitalization strategy.  Defined and implemented offshore / onshore / onsite consultant resource strategy to support a scale-up / scale-down approach and reduced product capitalized investment needs.  Developed and implemented infrastructure solutions (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), application and cloud architecture, continuous integration, and release management strategies.

 Developed software operations strategy to improve system reliability and performance, hasten response to critical system issues, enhance visibility into system performance through test automation, dashboards, and reporting, and expedite infrastructural improvement.  Led a transformation to Agile practices from a waterfall-based approach, including continuous improvement and implementation of SAFe practices.  Managed single, small delivery teams upward through managing the entire engineering group.  One of the primary architects and engineers for Connexus v2, the Education Management System (EMS) Connections Education uses for all its products and services. Connexus is a tightly integrated solution that incorporates features and functionally typically requiring multiple systems. Connexus facilitated the growth of Connections Education from a $7M company in 2004 serving 2K students per year to a $440M company serving over 50K students per year when we were acquired by Pearson in 2011.

Worked as an independent consultant and contractor for various clients in the Baltimore area. Designed, architected, developed, and delivered multi-functional scalable web applications using the Fusebox design framework and Cold Fusion. Delivered co-existing web and PDA applications using Visual Basic, C#, and the .NET architecture. Met with clients for weekly project updates. Created and formulated project timelines and estimates. Met all project requirements on-time and on cost projection. Constructed a web application sever cluster along with intranet toolset built in Cold Fusion to manage all hosting service functionality via secured web application.

Performed as the lead developer and team leader for the development and implementation of a web based Learning portal application primarily in Cold Fusion. Designed application framework, infrastructure and architecture. Implemented a change control cycle and source control system using the Rational suite and SourceSafe. Gathered requirements from clients. Planned and executed the entire development life-cycle. Managed multiple projects simultaneously, delegated responsibilities, and managed expectations. Varied implementations by co-hosting and remotely-hosting application. Customized functionality site wide per clients’ requests. Integrated customized sign in procedures to interface with client’s self service applications and databases. Designed universal purchasing and ecommerce system with client-based customizations for use by all of our learning portals using multiple payment gateways including Stentor, EasyClear, Bixler, Govolution, Cybercash and Cybersource.

Worked in a team of employees in the planning, designing, coding, and documentation of client/server and web-based applications. Integrated Cold Fusion, HTML, Java applets, and JavaScript to design fluid, dynamic web-based applications. Fully interfaced all web applications with Sybase and Oracle databases. Designed and constructed a universal security model and application for use with all web-based and desktop applications. Integrated web applications with WebSqribe Reportmart Repository for online reporting. Performed hardware installations and upgrades using primarily Compaq and Dell equipment. Performed on-call duties for a help desk to assist in customer support for users in and out of the local area. Assisted in managing over 80 LAN’s using Netware 3.x and 4.1x. Integrated Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and the Novell Application Manager into the company’s PC and network infrastructure. Upgraded, installed, and supported new and existing software.
