The Ph.D project aims to investigate the effect of mechanical stimuli on proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells cultured in a novel composite scaffold. By providing a stiff 3D structure able to bear mechanical stimuli and embedding a soft matrices of collagen, compression stimuli was transmitted to cells. The polymeric scaffolds were characterized in terms of mechanical properties in dry and immersed state. Collagen distribution and degradation was monitored over time by Micro Computed Tomography. Then, the effect of compression forces applied to such scaffolds seeded with mesenchymal stem cells was investigated aiming to clarify the effect of mechanical stimuli on cells proliferation and commitment.
