About
Guten Tag.

Here I do what I can do best: I can feed my curiosity, combine creativity with my technical knowledge, make structured decisions, and put them into action. For the benefit of our clients. My emphasis is today on communication so that it is easier to reach our goals based on team effort, and not by bravado. And I can use my professional knowledge for nurturing my calling which can be found on my personal website www.ip-lawyer-tools.com

That was probably the most difficult time in my life. I could again confirm what I already learned during my time in the army: I cannot thrive as a public servant. But I was still lucky, here is what happened to me: I was put into the 5th Gebrauchsmustersenat where I worked for federal judge Dr. Hans-Günther Wedershoven. He became one of my examples for life. And he introduced me into the subtleties of German utility model law practice. Because of that, the utility model is still my favorite IP right today.

I worked as an auxiliary patent examiner and as an auxiliary trademark examiner. I did not like the work as a patent examiner too much because I was put into the packaging machine technology department, which I found somewhat trivial, taken into account that I have before built a sensor that was used on a space shuttle. The time as a trademark examiner was fun. I worked with trademark oppositions and I have resolved at least ten trademark opposition cases because of lack of genuine use of the earlier marks. The owners of these earlier trademarks - although being lawyers - usually presented large but useless amounts of evidence, supporting the alleged genuine use of their trademarks. It did not help them often, because of purely formal reasons. The knowledge that I acquired during that time is still valuable today.

This was a stimulating time for me. I was an auxiliary clark for the then still young patent judges Dr. Meier-Beck, Dr. Becker, and Dr. Grabinski. We four went out for lunch two times per week, and I have learned a lot from them, especially from Dr. Becker whom I admire a lot, They gave me the love and passion for litigation in court. In fact, they shaped my life during a very important period of time.

Patent Engineer
Patentanwalt Paul
Neuss, Germany
Drafting patents, patent prosecution, trademark prosecution. I had a tough master, I learned mostly through sweat and tears.

Test Engineer
Université Joseph Fourier
Grenoble Area, France
Running material tests on polymer concrete samples and developing a new way to identify material laws by using frequency-domain system identification methods. That was one of the most enlightening times of my life. Living in France is very nice but working in academia is not my cup of tea.

Site Engineer
Inapec Ltda.
Itamonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Hydro-power engineer. A very nice time in my life but a severe financial crisis ended my assignment in Brazil. We had a high inflation, which at times reached rates of 25% per month. The price for a public bus ticket was often doubled from month to month.

Computer Technician
Soft & Hard Systemberatung Martin Schweiger
Weilheim i. Obb.
helping business owners to convert paper-based accounting systems to computer-based accounting systems. DOS 2.11 and Intel ´286 computers. This was a very nice job that paid at least two-thirds of my bachelor's degree in engineering.
Education

Patent Litigation in Europe

law school
That was an interesting time. While building up an international IP firm, I attended law school courses at the nearby university of Munich. My two kids were born and grew up during that time. I ran million $ revenues per year while I was still a law student. I finally made it and qualified for the 1st German state bar exam which happened to take place exactly at the same time when I had to sit for the Singapore patent attorney exam. I went for the Singapore patent attorney and canceled the exam in Munich. So I never qualified as a general lawyer in Germany, I always was a German, European and Singapore patent attorney, but never a German general lawyer. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me.
