As an editor I was, within a large international team, responsible for the production of ‘Storytel Originals’, audioseries which are exclusively available on Storytel’s platform. That meant not only acquiring and coaching authors and translators, but also sourcing narrators and designers. And most importantly, to keep in close contact with the external studio’s and ensuring the quality of the content.

Languagenut is a fun and simple-to-use website with online games, songs and stories that make teaching languages easy. To launch the website in the Netherlands, a translation from English to Dutch was needed. I did the final check on whether these translations made by Languagenut were correct and covered everything. An interesting project to work on and a good editing exercise for me!

uitgeverij lemniscaat

2014-8 - 2015-2 · 7 mos

As part of my MA Redacteur/editor I was an editorial intern at Lemniscaat for six months. My responsibilities mostly included copy editing, reading and evaluating manuscripts. However, because I was lucky to be able to do my internship at a relatively small publishing house, I was also able to help along in other departments like promotion/publicity and see other facets of the publishing of (children's) books.

As part of a team of passionate booksellers, my largest responsibility was to help and advise customers, to help opening and closing the shop and to count the daily sales. Additionally, I was also responsible for all online media marketing by creating and sending the shop's newsletter and updating the shop's social media accounts. From January 2014 on, I was assisting and advising my colleagues in rearranging the Young Adult department of the shop, as that genre has fascinated me for quite some time. This included being there to talk to representatives from various publishing houses, attending book fairs and reading as much YA-novels as I possibly could.

The Uitgeverij Jonge Historici forms a platform for young historians from all over The Netherlands to publish their academic research. The publishing house publishes papers digitally and makes them freely available for everyone. Within this young publishing house I was editor in the final process of publishing, checking every last detail before the papers went online. In addition to this I gave, together with a colleague, seminars to the other editors at Uitgeverij Jonge Historici and was generally available to answer any questions and help them improve their editing skills.

I was also closely involved in reviewing the new BA curriculum, which will be used from September 2013 on. Responsible for: processing student evaluations, attending faculty meetings (FOO), evaluating the new BA curriculum, maintaining contact with both students and teachers about the activities of the committee.

My job at De Troubadour largely consisted of assisting and supporting the office staff in their daily tasks. For a couple of months every year, I helped edit their yearly 'Woonboek', checking facts, shifting comma's and suggesting textual improvements. It was here that I discovered how thrilling it is to make a text the best it can be! Responsible for: managing and archiving orders (both electronical and on paper), updating price lists, administrative tasks, checking and editing publications.

After finishing my MA internship I was lucky enough to be able to continue working at Lemniscaat and get the opportunity to develop myself as an editor. As Editor Fiction and YA I am responsible for the manuscripts in their last phase of editing, working closely with the authors on the final versions of their texts and readying them for press. Next to this, I am developing myself as an acquisitions editor, always on the look-out for wonderful stories to publish. This includes keeping in touch with foreign publishers and attending the book fairs in Frankfurt and Bologna.

This BA offers a broad curriculum in literary courses, with a special emphasis on the influence literature has on culture and vice versa. Personal specializations: the Dutch cultural and literary field, Ancient Greek/Latin myths and literature, intermediality in literature, literary cultural criticism. I wrote my final thesis on the ever-changing field of adaptation studies, focussing on new media adaptations of literature, and the place they take within the discussions that are going on in this field. As a case study I used The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a videoblog adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, created by Bernie Su and Hank Green on YouTube.
