I was part of the early wave that helped pioneer social networking in the late 1990s, building some of the first platforms designed to connect people online.I recently argued in The Wall Street Journal that social media platforms may need to be regulated similarly to cigarettes due to their societal impact.Over time, I watched these systems evolve into engagement-driven ecosystems optimized for attention, data extraction, and behavioral influence.I later founded MeWe, a privacy-first social network designed without surveillance-based advertising or engagement-maximizing algorithms. That experience provided firsthand insight into how difficult it is to compete against systems optimized for engagement and scale. I am no longer involved in day-to-day operations.My book, Restoring Our Sanity Online, was awarded the 2026 AXIOM Gold Award for Outstanding Book of the Year and endorsed by leaders including Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Steve Wozniak.Earlier in my career, I founded SuperFamily.com and SuperFriends.com—early social networks recognized by PC Magazine’s “Top 100”—and developed 14 digital advertising patents.I’ve spoken globally, including a TEDx talk on the rise of surveillance capitalism, and have been widely interviewed across major media outlets.Today, I focus on:• platform accountability• digital rights• AI and emerging social systems…and how we can build technology that serves people rather than exploits them.
