Mark Overberg
Retired Director, Army Retirement Services
About
Two things Service members should know as they approach the end of their military careers: (1) “Retirement is a process, not an event.” Retiring well from the military takes time, study, introspection, and networking. Be ready for change and understand you don’t know what you don’t know. (2) Once you’ve retired from the military, realize the country still needs you. Inspire the next generation to serve in the military by setting the example. Connect Americans with the military that defends them. Tell them how your military career made you successful today. Help Americans understand who Service members and Veterans are. The views and opinions presented herein are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of DoD or the Army. Retired Director, Army Retirement Services
Headquarters, Dept. of the Army
Offering retirement planning advice and support to service members and their retirement services officers. Encouraging retired service members to continue to serve the nation in whatever way they can. Writing and speaking about military service.

Director, Army Retirement Services
Arlington, VA
I directed the Army program that prepares over 30,000 Active, Guard, and Reserve Soldiers and their families for retirement each year and then advises them and advocates for them for the rest of their lives. That means communicating with and educating the Army's largest demographic -- over 1,000,000 Retired Soldiers and 253,000 surviving spouses who live and can be Army Ambassadors throughout the world.

Deputy Chief, Army Retirement Services
Alexandria, VA
I developed new programs, sought to improve existing programs and wrote Army-wide policies to educate Soldiers about their retirement benefits and the decisions they face as they approach retirement. As the editor of Army Echoes, the Retired Soldier newsletter, I educated 926,000 Retired Soldiers and 248,000 surviving spouses about new laws and changing policies that impacted their military retirements. I also administered the Chief of Staff, Army Retired Soldier Council. This 14-member body advises the CSA about the concerns of the Army’s retired community and advocates for their welfare and involvement in Army life.
