Mark Evan Goldman, Ph.D. Was a pharmacologist at the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in La Jolla, CA. His 30+-year drug discovery background encompasses senior roles at Merck and Co. (West Point, PA), Ligand Pharmaceuticals (San Diego, CA) and Signal Pharmaceuticals (currently a division of Celgene Inc., San Diego, CA). Dr. Goldman’s experience at these institutions included leading the Merck Project Team that ultimately discovered and developed the non-nucleoside HIV reverse transcriptase inhibitor Efavirenz (Sustiva, licensed to Bristol-Myers Squibb) as well as numerous lead compounds for cancer (RAR/RXR-selective retinoids, Ligand Pharma), non-steroidal nuclear receptor agonists/antagonists (Ligand Pharma), NF-kB/AP-1 immunomodulators (Signal Pharma) and bioterror threats (PI for numerous NIH and US Department of Defense grants/contracts related to anthrax lethal factor inhibitors; Hawaii Biotech, Aiea, HI). He has served as a member of NIH counterbioterrorism study sections. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. In these roles, he also was involved in licensing drug candidates (both in-licensing and out-licensing). Dr. Goldman continues to maintain close relationships with key industry leaders at biotech companies as well as at major multi-national pharmaceutical companies. He received the Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology from The University of Texas at Austin and spent 5 years as a post-doc/senior staff fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
